Pilgrim Walks Walks will run from 7-14 July 2008. Pilgrims are encouraged to take a walk to the following places of historical and religious significance that provide peace and tranquillity to enrich your pilgrimage. Each pilgrim walk will have a reflection and prayer. Pilgrim Places Open from 7-14 July 2008. Pilgrims will have the opportunity for private adoration at key Melbourne churches. Pilgrims House of Prayer Open from 10-12 July 2008. Pilgrims will be given a place to pray and reflect at St Augustine’s Church in the city. Youth will have the chance to express their faith with pilgrims from around the world in this intimate and peaceful setting. Venue: St Augustine’s Church, Bourke Street Closest Transport Hub: Southern Cross Station Tarrawarra Abbey Pilgrimage Visits Open 8, 10, 12 July 2008. The Tarrawarra Abbey pilgrimage visit will provide the opportunity for pilgrims to experience this special and sacred place. This community of contemplative monks holds a special place in the hearts of Melbourne Catholics. In 2004, Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart celebrated Mass for the Abbey’s 50th anniversary. Enriching Our Catholic Faith and Life Workshops Runs from 8-12 July 2008. The agencies of the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in cooperation with the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family will hold a series of workshops open to all pilgrims. Melbourne’s Days in the Dioceses Commissioning Mass Gates open at 4pm, Mass starts at 6:30pm. A special Mass will be celebrated by Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart at Telstra Dome on Friday 11 July, to wish pilgrims a safe onward journey to World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney. It will be an unmissable faith experience for any pilgrim to be among the crowd of 50,000 in the surrounds of one of Melbourne’s premier sporting venues. DID08 Festival Runs from 12-13 July 2008. Promoting cultural awareness with an emphasis on faith, the two-day DID08 Festival includes multicultural and musical performances open to all domestic and international pilgrims, their host families, the broader Melbourne Catholic community and the wider public. Pilgrims progressively farewell Melbourne as they leave for WYD08 in Sydney. For the many pilgrims travelling by bus, coaches will depart from the following locations: Central: Southern Cross Station North: Penola Catholic College, Broadmeadows South: Nazareth College, Noble Park North East: Marcellin College, Bulleen West: Catholic Regional College and Sacred Heart Primary School, St Albans FREE ATTRACTIONS Royal Botanic Gardens The Royal Botanic Gardens offer free guided walks. The gardens are attractively landscaped, with stately trees, gardens and lawns. There is a rainforest gully, which is home to a colony of fruit bats. Fitzroy Gardens Fitzroy Gardens is another delightful parkland area with a model Tudor village and the famous carved trunk of the Fairy Tree. Take a look at Captain Cook`s cottage, which was brought out stone by stone from Yorkshire in 1934 and was the home of Captain Cook`s parents. Around sunset you can see possums in nearby Treasury Gardens. St Kilda Take a tram to St Kilda. The pier is always bustling, and the grand old hotels are now cafés, cinemas and restaurants. Follow The Esplanade along the beach, where there is a craft market on Sunday. A ferry goes from St Kilda to Williamstown across the bay. Williamstown Williamstown seems slightly removed from the bustle of Melbourne. Follow the Heritage Walk around the former maritime village to appreciate the historic buildings and quaint pubs. Visit Nelson Place and get a great view of Melbourne from the beach. Yarra on foot You can explore the banks of the Yarra on foot. From Flinders Street Station, follow Flinders Walk before crossing the river via the footbridge. Follow Southbank Promenade in either direction as it passes the Crown Casino complex and the Southgate complex, which are both worth a look. Beyond Princes Bridge lies Alexandra Gardens, a pleasant place to stop and watch the rowing crews on the river. If you’re feeling energetic, you can hire a punt. City Circle Tram The burgundy and cream coloured City Circle Tram is free. It takes a circular route past many of the main attractions in the city area. Queen Victoria Market Queen Victoria Market is a bustling food market on the north-western edge of the CBD. It is open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Melbourne Central Melbourne Central is a large retail complex, incorporating a historic shot tower. There is a superb clock with Australian figurines, which move to the tune of Waltzing Matilda on the hour. It is well worth a look. State Houses of Parliament There is a free guided tour of the State Houses of Parliament when Parliament is not sitting. This imposing building on Spring Street is the centre of State government. St Kilda Road St Kilda Road is the stately boulevard of Melbourne. Take a walk along this tree-lined street and imagine you are in some European city - Paris maybe? Walk as far as the Shrine of Remembrance and glimpse the city through the trees. Federation Square Fast becoming the cultural icon of Melbourne with its ‘Fractal Façade’ system on each building in the square. The façade is made up of triangles made of sandstone, zinc and glass pieced together at different orientations and surface angles.
The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia This is the home of the National Gallery of Victoria’s Australian art collection, which is said to be the largest in the world. Admission to the permanent collection is free but fees may apply to special exhibitions. Located in Federation Square.
Australian Centre for the Moving Image While at Federation Square, visit the Australian Centre for the Moving Image with its Screen Gallery and large collection of exhibits pertaining to Australian screen-based art, including film, video, television, interactive installations, and computer animation. Entry to the Screen Gallery, open Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday, Sunday and public holidays from 10am to 6pm, is free. National Gallery of Victoria Located on St Kilda Rd in its newly renovated building, the National Gallery of Victoria (which has its Australian collection in Federation Square at The Ian Potter Centre) contains Victoria’s extensive international collections with the works of some of the biggest names in international art. Entry to the National Gallery of Victoria is free, although fees may apply to special, particularly visiting, exhibitions. Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle The Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle is a free hop-on, hop-off service, operating between 9.30am and 4.30pm daily. The Shuttle bus makes a good companion to the city circle tram as the shuttle take in a north south route across the city from the gardens to Carlton where the tram is more of east west route from the docklands to the parliament area. |
