In just one month’s time, ‘Pilgrim No. 1’, Pope Benedict XVI, will arrive in Sydney for World Youth Day. Calling the Holy Father ‘Pilgrim No. 1’ is a reminder to us that all the other thousands of pilgrims coming to Australia for this event are not coming to meet the Pope. He is coming with them as a fellow pilgrim, keeping an‘appointment’ with them, as he himself has said. They are coming here on pilgrimage to meet Jesus, and they are coming to meet him here among us in Australia.
We have just completed the month of May, dedicated in a special way to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Our Lord. Saturdays have always been a special day of devotion to Our Lady, and the Saturdays in May especially, but last Saturday (31 May) also coincided with the Feast of the Visitation. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect a little on St Luke’s account of this important event in the life of Mary.
