Solomon established a well-ordered government, provided for the
security of the nation, took pains to advance his people culturally and
promoted the common good. He also became known as the founder of a
special form of wisdom literature.

Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
Reflection on the 1st reading (Ezekiel 47:1-2, 8-9, 12)
Ezekiel
may have been a young Jewish priest taken to Chaldea with about 10,000
exiles after the first siege of Jerusalem in 598 BC. There he was
called by God, as he tells us. Like so many blessed young people,
Ezekiel had visions and dreams. Just ask anyone you know who attended
World Youth Day.

All Soul’s Day
Reflection on the 1st reading (Wisdom 4:7-15)
The
Book of Wisdom was written in Egypt between 80 and 50 BC by one of the
many Jews living in a region influenced by Greek culture. In the last
centuries BC, Greek culture spread by Alexander, had penetrated the
Middle East. The Greeks had a new way of viewing freedom of the
individual and nobility of spirit. They promoted scientific research
and esteemed physical beauty and prowess highly.
